 Remembering George Carlin Carlin's seven dirty words routine was the center of a famous obscenity case in the 1970s. He has a new book When Will Jesus Bring the Pork Chops? His other books include Napalm & Silly Putty, and Brain Droppings. In the 1970s, George Carlin's seven dirty words routine was the center of a famous obscenity case. More recently, the comic was named the recipient of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, an award scheduled to be presented at the Kennedy Center in November. Carlin died of heart failure Sunday the age of 71. Comedian George Carlin spent a lot of time sending up cliches, including the cliches people use when they talk about someone who's died — making himself a tough guy to write an obituary for. It's his routine "seven words you can never say on television" that will probably be most remembered. It led to his arrest in a case that made it all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. Carlin stayed busy to the end — he worked his last weekend at The Orleans in Las Vegas, and had dates there through the end of November, when he was also scheduled to receive the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor at the Kennedy Center in Washington. Everyone loves a person who makes you laugh, and you naturally mourn when a comedian passes away. George Carlin made a lot of people laugh with his observational humor, and we're saddened by the loss. But the media appreciations of Carlin hail him for his daring in "crossing the line" of good taste.
